“Azorean Light” – Paintings by Mary Dorsey Brewster

June 23, 2023 - August 4, 2023

Reception: July 8, 2023, 1:00-3:00 pm with Joao Silva playing classical Portuguese guitar. The public is cordially invited. Admission is free.

I made trips to the Azores in 2021 and 2022, and fell in love with the actively inhabited landscapes of seaside towns and farms.  The moody weather, enthusiastic vegetation, rough stone houses, and omnipresent volcanic cones all generated wonderful compositions.  This show honors the magnificent landscapes of the Azores and the strong ties found here between the people and their surroundings.

Against the backdrop of the open ocean, these islands have strong cultural traditions that are integrated with the landscape. This has led to a group of oil paintings exploring the wonderful land and light of the islands. The paintings are based on actual places in the islands, and celebrate their uniqueness and beauty. The process of creating these paintings  has given me moments of great delight.

It is my wish to share these paintings in New England, for those familiar with these landscapes, and with anyone else with a tie to the islands. People have a strong love and loyalty to this lovely part of the world, and now I know why. I hope these paintings tug at your heartstrings to bring you joy.
